Day 236: Still Not Quite Summer
It’s still not quite Summer
We can’t get ahead of ourselves
Mother Nature just has a fever
As she rapidly shifts her climates
It’s still not quite Summer
I could tell when I walked out the door
As the sunshine made my neck sweat
And the cold breeze stung my bare arms
It’s still not quite Summer
And we can’t figure out our attire
I’m catching glimpses of short shorts
And long winter coats
It’s still not quite Summer
There’s no glint of hope in children’s eyes
Just a look of panicked desperation
Because they really have to pee
It’s still not quite Summer
But I am easily fooled
I can’t tell if the warm wave is the weather
Or a nearby pizza oven
It’s still not quite Summer
But people do whatever they please
They still sit on the sidewalk to talk on the phone
And chase each other around on scooters
It’s still not quite Summer
There’s no reason to celebrate
That salsa music you hear in the distance
Is just a junkie with a boom box
It’s still not quite Summer
But the sun still burns your eyes
And when you step into the shade
It’s like walking into a meat locker
It’s still not quite Summer
Businessmen kick masks on the ground
The city is full of life
But also long dead at the same time
It’s still not quite Summer
But we still seek shelter on the train
Whether we want it to be cold or warm
We really haven’t figured out yet
It’s still not quite Summer
But we can feel it on the horizon
We can smell the ocean and the beach
And the stale sweat soaking into our couch
It’s still not quite Summer
But we can still put up our feet
We’ve been through an awful lot
And deserve any sort of reprieve
It’s still not quite Summer
And that’s a good thing, not bad
Because as long as it’s not considered Summer
We’re even farther away from Winter
